The importance of fluid
It is important to keep children hydrated. Drinks should be offered to them at meal times and throughout the day. Suitable drinks to offer between meals include milk and water. Full fat milk should be offered until a child is 2 years of age. From the age of 2, if the child is eating a good variety of foods, semi skimmed milk can be offered.
Sugary drinks such as cola, lemonade and squashes should not be consumed too often. If they are consumed, they should be offered during meal times only when they are less damaging to teeth.
Don’t fill children up with drinks before meal times as this may affect their appetite.
